What is polyester-reinforced bitumen-aluminium composite cavity flashing?

Polyester-reinforced bitumen-aluminium composite cavity flashing adds a polyester scrim layer to the standard bitumen-aluminium laminate, providing substantially improved tear and puncture resistance under mortar loading. It is selected for wide-cavity applications, parapet-level flashings, and situations where the standard grade has previously failed through puncture or thermal creep.

Alcore Australia

Alcore Australia — Polyester-Reinforced Bitumen-Aluminium Composite (Heavy Duty)

Polyester-reinforced bitumen-aluminium composite cavity flashing — heavy duty

System Description

Alcore's heavy-duty polyester-reinforced product adds a polyester scrim layer to the standard bitumen-aluminium laminate, providing substantially improved tear and puncture resistance under mortar loading. Suitable for wide-cavity applications where the unsupported flashing span is greater and mortar drop loading is higher during construction. The polyester scrim provides tensile reinforcement against tearing during installation and puncture from mortar dropped into the cavity. Suitable for parapet-level flashings and other applications where thermal creep and sag resistance are required. Confirm current product widths, roll lengths, and specifications with Alcore Australia or local distributor before specifying.

Technical Properties

  • Construction: aluminium foil + polyester scrim + bitumen — substantially improved tear and puncture resistance over standard grade
  • Polyester scrim reinforcement layer — resists mortar drop loading and mechanical damage during construction
  • Self-healing at minor mechanical damage — bitumen layer

Limitations

  • Less flexible at tight bends compared to standard Alcore — form complex profiles before installation, not on site
  • Higher cost than standard grade — justify use on wide-cavity or high-load applications only
  • Lap sealing tape still mandatory — polyester reinforcement does not provide waterproofing at laps

Bituline

Bituline — Reinforced Bitumen-Aluminium Composite Cavity Flashing

Reinforced bitumen-aluminium composite cavity flashing — alternative supplier

System Description

Bituline's reinforced bitumen-aluminium composite provides an alternative to Alcore heavy-duty for wide-cavity and parapet applications. Technical properties are broadly equivalent to Alcore reinforced — confirm current TDS with supplier before specifying, as product specifications vary. Available through roofing and building products merchants. Confirm reinforcement type, available widths, and roll lengths with local merchant before ordering.

Technical Properties

  • Construction: reinforced bitumen-aluminium laminate — polyester reinforcement layer (confirm with supplier)
  • Self-healing at minor mechanical damage — bitumen layer
  • Available in standard widths for wide-cavity applications — confirm widths and roll lengths with supplier

Limitations

  • Confirm current TDS with supplier before specifying — product specifications may vary by batch or supplier
  • Availability varies by merchant location — confirm stock before ordering
  • Confirm reinforcement type is polyester scrim (not fibreglass) before specifying for cavity flashing applications

PROCUREMENT SOURCES

Confirm suitability with the current manufacturer TDS before specifying or applying.

Do not confuse polyester-reinforced Alcore with:

  • Standard Alcore bitumen-aluminium composite — unreinforced, lighter, less puncture-resistant — appropriate for standard cavity widths — listed on the bitumen-aluminium composite page
  • Alcore self-adhesive with weep formers — bonded to substrate, integral weep geometry — different installation method — listed on the Alcore self-adhesive with weep formers page
  • Lead cavity flashing — heavier, self-sealing at mechanical laps, different thermal behaviour — listed on the cavity flashing — lead page
  • Aluminium strip flashing — no bitumen layer, thicker but different material — listed on the cavity flashing — aluminium page
