What are metal angle flashing systems for balcony hob waterproofing termination?

Metal termination bars and angle flashings are used at the top of the balcony door hob to mechanically clamp and protect the waterproofing membrane termination edge. They prevent the membrane from peeling back from the hob face due to UV exposure, thermal cycling and physical damage, and provide a defined and sealed termination point for the waterproofing system.

316L stainless steel waterproofing termination bar

316L stainless termination bar — waterproofing membrane termination

System Description

316L stainless steel termination bars are flat or angle section metal bars fixed along the top of the hob upstand to clamp and protect the waterproofing membrane termination edge. The membrane is taken up the face of the hob and turned over the top, and the termination bar is fixed over the membrane at the top of the hob with 316 stainless screws at typically 150mm centres. A compatible sealant is applied along the top edge of the termination bar to prevent water from tracking back under the bar and membrane. 316L stainless is specified for coastal and high-exposure locations — aluminium termination bars are used for inland locations. Termination bars are available as extruded aluminium or flat stainless bar from metal suppliers and building hardware suppliers — purpose-made termination profiles may also be available from waterproofing accessory suppliers. Confirm that the top of the bar is at or above the required NCC hob height above the waterproofed finished floor. All fixings must be 316 stainless. TODO: owner confirm — confirm preferred stainless termination bar profile and fixing centres before specifying.

Technical Properties

  • 316L stainless flat bar or angle — termination bar for waterproofing membrane at hob top
  • Fixed with 316L stainless screws at 150mm centres — confirm spacing with waterproofing spec
  • Compatible sealant applied along top edge — prevents water tracking under the bar

Limitations

  • Confirm 316L not 304 grade with supplier — 304 not suitable for coastal locations
  • Fixings must be 316 stainless — do not mix grades at coastal locations
  • Sealant at top of bar must be continuous — any gap is a water entry point

PROCUREMENT SOURCES

Confirm material grade for coastal suitability and fixing centres before ordering.

Aluminium section / building hardware supplier

Aluminium waterproofing termination bar / angle flashing

Aluminium termination bar — waterproofing membrane termination — inland

System Description

Extruded aluminium termination bars and angle flashings are used at the top of the hob upstand to clamp and protect the waterproofing membrane termination at inland, non-coastal balcony locations. Aluminium termination bars are available from aluminium extrusion suppliers and building hardware suppliers as flat bar, angle or purpose-designed profiles. The membrane is taken up and over the hob and the bar is fixed over the membrane termination with 316 stainless screws (all fixings must be 316 stainless even with aluminium profiles — to prevent corrosion at the fixing point). A compatible sealant is applied along the top edge of the bar. Anodised or powder-coated finish — confirm colour match with the balcony door frame or sill trim. Not suitable for coastal or marine-influenced locations — specify 316L stainless termination bars for coastal applications. Confirm profile dimensions suit the specific hob geometry. TODO: owner confirm — confirm preferred aluminium termination bar profile and supplier.

Technical Properties

  • Extruded aluminium termination bar or angle — for inland balcony hob waterproofing termination
  • All fixings must be 316 stainless screws — even with aluminium profile, to prevent corrosion at the fixing
  • Compatible sealant along top edge — prevents water tracking under the bar

Limitations

  • Not suitable for coastal or marine-influenced locations — corrodes at cut edges and fixing points in salt air
  • All fixings must be 316 stainless — aluminium profile with inferior grade fixings will corrode at the fixing point
  • Sealant along top of bar must be continuous — gaps allow water ingress under the termination

PROCUREMENT SOURCES

Confirm material grade for coastal suitability and fixing centres before ordering.

Waterproofing accessories supplier

Proprietary membrane termination profile — purpose-designed

Proprietary WP termination profile — balcony hob — purpose-designed

System Description

Proprietary waterproofing membrane termination profiles are purpose-designed extruded sections that provide an engineered termination detail at the top of the hob upstand. Unlike a simple flat bar, proprietary profiles typically include an integral sealant recess channel on the back leg (to lock in the top of the membrane), a screw fixing flange with pre-punched or pre-drilled fixing holes, and a drip nose on the front leg to prevent water tracking under the profile. These purpose-designed features provide a more reliable membrane termination than a simple flat bar, and reduce the risk of membrane peel or delamination at the top of the hob. Available from waterproofing accessory suppliers and specialised flashing manufacturers — confirm material grade (aluminium for inland, stainless 316 for coastal), Australian availability, compatibility with the specific membrane system and NCC hob height compliance before specifying. All fixings must be 316 stainless regardless of profile material. TODO: owner confirm — confirm specific proprietary profile, Australian supplier and material grade before specifying.

Technical Properties

  • Purpose-designed termination profile — integral sealant channel, fixing flange and drip nose
  • Provides engineered membrane termination — reduces peel and delamination risk at hob top
  • Available in aluminium (inland) or stainless 316 (coastal) — confirm material grade for exposure

Limitations

  • Confirm Australian availability before specifying — not all proprietary termination profiles are stocked in Australia
  • Confirm material grade for coastal suitability — aluminium profiles not suitable for coastal locations
  • Confirm compatibility with the specific waterproofing membrane product before specifying

PROCUREMENT SOURCES

Confirm material grade for coastal suitability and fixing centres before ordering.

Critical notes for metal angle waterproofing termination at door hobs:

  • Metal termination bars are a mechanical fixing for the membrane edge — they do not waterproof the termination in isolation; the sealant joint above the termination bar is the primary waterproofing element at this junction
  • Always specify 316 stainless termination angles in balcony applications — aluminium termination bars corrode in wet, tile-grouted environments over time and are not appropriate for coastal locations
  • The sealant joint between the top of the termination bar and the door frame must be a compatible, correctly specified sealant — this joint is the most critical element in the termination assembly
  • Fixing screws through the termination angle into the hob must be 316 stainless and must be screw-sealed or sealed with sealant on installation — each fixing is a potential water path if left open
  • Membrane must be lapped under the termination bar and the bar pressed onto the membrane before fixing — do not apply the termination bar to bare substrate and then try to tuck membrane under it afterwards
  • Termination bar must be installed at minimum height above finished tile level as required by AS 3740 — do not install the termination bar below the required upstand height to accommodate the door frame
