What is Dulux Weathershield Masonry Water Repellent?

Dulux Weathershield Masonry Water Repellent is a penetrating silane/siloxane water repellent for brick, masonry and concrete facades. Penetrates the pore structure and forms a hydrophobic barrier without a surface film — the treated surface is invisible and vapour permeable. Available through Dulux trade centres and hardware retail nationally, making it accessible for maintenance applications and residential projects. All defects must be repaired and masonry must be clean and dry before application.

Typical applications
  • General water repellent treatment to brick and masonry facades after structural repairs and repointing are complete
  • Maintenance re-application to previously treated facades as part of a building maintenance programme
  • Water repellent treatment on domestic or residential masonry where retail product availability is preferred
Selection criteria
  • Specify Dulux Weathershield where Dulux supply channels are preferred or where retail availability is required for maintenance use
  • For specialist construction or high-exposure facade applications, consider Sika Protectosil or Mapei Antipluviol S — construction-grade silane/siloxane products
  • Apply as a flood coat to saturation — do not brush-apply lightly; inadequate application rate is the most common cause of poor performance
Limitations & exclusions
  • Does not seal cracks — any crack wider than ~0.1 mm will allow water entry regardless of silane treatment
  • Will not stop rising damp or below-ground moisture
  • Ineffective on painted, coated, or contaminated surfaces — must penetrate bare masonry pore structure
Standards & notes
  • AS 3700 — Masonry Structures — references water repellent treatment as supplementary protection
  • Dulux Weathershield TDS — confirm current coverage rate, application conditions and re-application interval
  • CCAA Data Sheet — Water Repellent Treatments for Concrete — guidance on silane selection and application
Suitable defects
  • Porous or absorbent masonry facade where water ingress occurs through the pore structure rather than through open defects
  • Maintenance re-application to brick facades after the original water repellent treatment service life has elapsed
  • General wind-driven rain protection on residential masonry facades after repointing is complete
Typical substrates
  • Fired clay brick — bare, dry, unpainted surface required — apply by flood coat
  • Concrete masonry block — bare, dry concrete — confirm coverage rate on dense concrete
  • Render and textured masonry coatings — confirm product compatibility with the render type before specifying

Do not confuse Dulux Weathershield with:

  • Dulux Weathershield exterior paint system — a decorative surface-film coating system; not a penetrating water repellent; does not have the same breathability or penetration as the masonry water repellent product
  • Sika Protectosil BHN/CIT — construction-grade silane/siloxane by Sika; higher penetration depth on dense substrates; specify for critical or high-exposure facade applications
  • Mapei Antipluviol S — construction-grade silane/siloxane by Mapei; comparable to Protectosil; specify for critical applications where Mapei supply chain is preferred
  • Surface-film sealers — film-forming silicone or acrylic sealers that coat the surface rather than penetrating; these can trap moisture and peel
  • Elastomeric crack-bridging coatings — these seal cracks through film formation; Dulux Weathershield does not bridge cracks and must not be relied upon to seal open defects

Disclaimer

This page provides general technical information only. Silane product selection, application rate, coverage, and re-application interval must be confirmed against the project's masonry type, porosity and exposure conditions. Treatment is supplementary to structural repair — not a substitute for defective masonry remediation. Confirm current product data with the Dulux TDS before specifying or applying.
