Salt removal & desalination

Salt removal and desalination treatments are used to reduce chloride and sulfate salt concentrations in masonry walls affected by rising damp, marine exposure, or historical salt contamination. Desalination poultices draw soluble salts from the substrate as they dry. Salt removal is performed before renovation plaster or coating application to improve system performance. Westox Cocoon is a desalination poultice for this application. Confirm current specifications with Westox technical before specifying.

Desalination poultice — masonry, brick and stone

System Description

Westox Cocoon is a desalination poultice for salt removal from masonry, brick, and stone surfaces. Desalination treatments are used in remedial works to reduce chloride and sulfate salt concentrations in walls affected by rising damp, marine exposure, or historical salt contamination before renovation plaster or coating application. Poultice desalination involves applying the product wet to the masonry surface where it draws soluble salts into the poultice material as it dries, which is then removed along with the extracted salts. Multiple applications may be required for heavily salt-contaminated substrates. Confirm current product technical data sheet, application method, coverage, number of applications required, and compatible subsequent system with Westox technical before specifying.

Technical Properties

  • Desalination poultice — draws soluble salts from brick, masonry, and stone surfaces as the poultice dries
  • Used prior to renovation plaster or coating to reduce salt contamination levels in the substrate
  • Confirm application method, coverage, number of treatment cycles, and subsequent system from current Westox Cocoon TDS

Limitations

  • Confirm current product formulation and system specifications with Westox technical before specifying
  • Desalination reduces but does not eliminate salt contamination in severely affected substrates — multiple applications may be needed
  • Not a substitute for addressing the source of moisture and salt ingress — rising damp and water ingress must be treated first

PROCUREMENT SOURCES
