Liquid-applied acrylic and water-based waterproofing membranes
Technical product reference for liquid-applied acrylic, SBR polymer, and water-based waterproofing membranes. Covers product classification, exposure suitability, system selection, and brand comparisons for Australian Class 2 strata building applications.
What are liquid-applied acrylic and SBR-latex membranes?
This category covers liquid-applied, water-based acrylic and SBR-latex waterproofing membranes used in balcony, wet-area, roof, podium and facade remediation. Two distinct duties sit here: under-tile / wet-area grades (AS 4858 Class III, covered by tile or screed) and exposed external grades (AS 4654, UV-stable and often pedestrian-trafficable). Acrylic and SBR membranes are lower-cost and easy to apply, but have lower elongation and ponding tolerance than polyurethane — selection must match chemistry and class to the duty (wet-area vs exposed), confirm UV/trafficability for exposed grades, and confirm primer, dried film thickness, recoat/cure time and permanently-wet suitability.
Class 2 (NCC) — balconies, roofs & podiums: specify only a membrane with current Australian test certification (see the “Class 2 / NCC tested” field on each card). A product shown as N/A is unverified — not a substitute for a certified system.

ARDEX Australia
ARDEX WPM 909
1-part water-based acrylic — exposed trafficable roof/podium
ARDEX WPM 909 is a single-component, water-based acrylic waterproofing membrane compliant to AS 4654, for exposed pedestrian-trafficable rooftops, podiums and walkways with excellent UV resistance and slip/abrasion resistance. Two-coat application, 8–9 m² per 15 L drum; primer (WPM 300 / WPM 265 / Multiprime) optional on sound substrates. Light grey. CONFIRM DFT, recoat/cure and ponding tolerance against the current Ardex Australia TDS.
ARDEX Australia
ARDEX WPM 310
Water-based acrylic — exposed facade / roof (tintable)
ARDEX WPM 310 is a water-based acrylic membrane (AS 4654 certified) for exposed facades and roofs, UV-stable and tintable to a wide colour range. Applied in 2 coats to 0.3 mm DFT for walls/facades (≈24 m² per 15 L) or 1.0 mm for roofs; recoat 4 h, full cure ~7 days. CONFIRM AS 4858 applicability, primer and substrate prep against the current Ardex Australia TDS.
Crommelin
Crommelin Wetite
Water-based acrylic / SBR under-tile membrane (standard cure)
Crommelin Wetite is a water-based acrylic/SBR under-tile waterproofing membrane for wet areas — the standard-cure counterpart to Wetite Rapid. CONFIRM AS 4858 class, build/DFT, coverage, recoat time and primer against the current Crommelin Australia TDS.
Crommelin
Crommelin Wetite Rapid
Water-based SBR polymer — rapid under-tile membrane
Crommelin Wetite Rapid is a water-based SBR-polymer waterproofing membrane modified for rapid drying and tile-over, compliant with AS 4858 Wet Area Membranes (Class III), AS 3740 and AS 4654. Rapid recoat 1–2 h; tile over in as little as 4 h; permanent Class III elongation; keyed finish. CONFIRM total DFT, coverage and primer against the current Crommelin Australia TDS.
Gripset Industries
Gripset 38FC
Water-based fibre-reinforced SBR latex — fast-cure under-tile
Gripset 38FC is a water-based, fast-cure, fibre-reinforced SBR-latex membrane compliant with AS 4858 (internal wet areas) and AS 4654.1 (external above-ground), holding CSIRO Technical Assessment 349 for AS 3740. Apply ≥2 coats by brush or medium-nap roller to a total 1.5 L/m² and a minimum 1.0 mm dried film (≈10 m² per 15 L). Recoat 1 h; tile/toppings 4 h; flood test 24 h. For internal and external wet areas under toppings, screeds or tile beds. CONFIRM primer against the current Gripset Australia TDS.
Gripset Industries
Gripset RD
Water-based acrylic — exposed weatherproofing (light-traffic)
Gripset RD is a water-based, solvent-free, elastomeric acrylic weatherproofing membrane for exposed areas — facades, parapet walls, graded light-trafficable floors, box gutters and roof surfaces — that bridges cracks up to 3 mm and resists fungi/algae growth in humid/tropical environments. Roof/deck rate 1.5 L/m² (≈10 m² per 15 L); facade rate 1.0 L/m² (≈15 m² per 15 L). CONFIRM AS 4858/AS 4654 classification and primer against the current Gripset Australia TDS.

Common uses — acrylic and water-based membranes
- Internal wet area waterproofing — bathrooms, laundries, ensuites under tiles
- Under-tile balcony and terrace waterproofing where a covered membrane system is required
- Exposed pedestrian deck and balcony surfaces — only where the specific product is rated for trafficable and UV-exposed use
- External wall, facade, and parapet waterproofing and weather protection
- Roof and deck weatherproofing — flat or low-slope roofs requiring a flexible waterproof coating
- Remedial waterproofing overlays — where substrate condition, adhesion testing, and detailing are properly controlled
Technical limitations — do not assume product equivalence
Acrylic and SBR water-based membranes should not be treated as automatically equal to polyurethane or polyurethane-hybrid membranes for exposed remedial balcony work. Product selection in this category depends on:
- UV exposure — SBR systems are not formulated for prolonged direct sun and must be covered
- Trafficability — only specifically rated acrylic systems are suitable as exposed pedestrian finishes
- Movement and thermal cycling — SBR and acrylic have lower elongation than polyurethane — confirm against substrate movement expectations
- Drainage — confirm the membrane detail at drains and penetrations matches the drainage system being used
- Substrate condition — moisture content, surface profile, and adhesion test results
- Whether the membrane is under-tile, under-screed, or exposed — these are not interchangeable
- Primer requirements — mandatory for all products in this group
- Reinforcing fabric requirements — required at all corners, junctions, and penetrations in most systems
- Dry film thickness and number of coats — single-coat application is insufficient for any product in this group
- Curing time before tiling, screed, or foot traffic — confirm with the current manufacturer TDS
- Compatibility with tile adhesive, screed, toppings, or overlay coatings
- AS 3740 and AS 4858 compliance — confirm classification with the manufacturer for the specific product
Do not confuse products in this category with: polyurethane membranes (separate product group), cementitious flexible membranes (ARDEX 8+9, Mapelastic Foundation), sheet membranes, or epoxy moisture barriers.
