Floor grinding & preparation
Diamond floor grinding machine for surface preparation — technical reference for magnesite flooring deterioration in Australian remedial building practice. Covers system selection, product comparisons, and brand equivalents.
What is floor grinding & preparation?
Surface preparation by mechanical grinding is mandatory before any magnesite encapsulation or overlay system. The grinding process achieves CSP 2 surface profile (ICRI 310.2), removes surface laitance, contaminants, old adhesive residues, and loose material, and opens the substrate pores for primer penetration and adhesion. CRITICAL SAFETY REQUIREMENT: magnesite dust is a respiratory and skin irritant containing magnesium chloride compounds. All grinding of magnesite must be carried out with M-class or H-class HEPA dust extraction connected directly to the grinder at all times. Under no circumstances should magnesite be ground dry without extraction. Collected dust must be disposed of as chemical waste and not emptied into general building waste. Full PPE including P2 respirator, eye protection, and nitrile gloves is mandatory. A Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is required under WHS regulations before commencing magnesite grinding on any commercial or Class 2 building site.

System Description
CAUTION: Magnesite dust contains magnesium chloride — classified as a respiratory hazard. Grinding must be performed wet or with M-class or H-class HEPA vacuum extraction at all times. Operator PPE: P2 respirator minimum, eye protection, gloves. Achieve min CSP 2 profile on magnesite before primer application. Do not generate dry airborne dust.
Technical Properties
- Mechanical grinding achieves consistent CSP 2 profile required for primer adhesion
- Diamond tooling allows controlled material removal without damaging underlying concrete slab
Limitations
- HEPA M-class or H-class extraction is mandatory — dry grinding without extraction is not acceptable
- SWMS required under WHS regulations before commencing — magnesite dust is a hazardous substance
PROCUREMENT SOURCES
