What is abrasives, blades & tools?
Diamond cutting blades, crack chasing blades, and angle grinder abrasive discs are the principal cutting and surface preparation tools used in concrete remediation works before any repair product is placed. Diamond blades are used to saw-cut around the perimeter of spalled areas, saw-chase cracks for injection port preparation, and cut existing sealant joints for reinstatement — they require water cooling on reinforced concrete to prevent overheating and blade glazing. Angle grinder discs are used for concrete surface profiling, removal of carbonated or contaminated laitance, and preparation of feathered edges at repair perimeters to achieve the minimum CSP (concrete surface profile) specified by the repair mortar manufacturer. Both are consumable items; blade and disc selection (bond hardness, diamond concentration, grit size) must match the concrete hardness and application to achieve cost-effective service life. Use of these tools generates respirable crystalline silica (RCS) dust — a mandatory silica risk assessment and RPF3 respirator are required.
