Reinforcement mesh
316 SS welded wire reinforcement mesh — technical reference for slab edge deterioration in Australian remedial building practice. Covers system selection, product comparisons, and brand equivalents.
What is reinforcement mesh?
Stainless steel reinforcement mesh is used in concrete overlays, slab reinstatements, and repair sections where corrosion resistance of the embedded reinforcement is required for long-term durability. The primary application is in carparks, marine structures, balconies, and podium slabs exposed to chloride from de-icing salts or marine spray, where mild steel mesh would eventually corrode and cause the repair to spall — replicating the original defect. Grade 316 stainless does not corrode under chloride exposure, eliminating the risk of spalling from the new overlay throughout its design service life. The mesh is cut to fit the repair geometry and placed at correct cover depth with appropriate plastic or stainless spacers before repair mortar is placed over it. Significantly more expensive than conventional mild steel mesh, it is specified on the basis of whole-of-life cost and residual risk rather than initial cost.

System Description
For supplementary reinforcement in edge repairs. 316 SS in chloride environments. Maintain min 30 mm cover.
Technical Properties
- Distributes loads and controls crack propagation in concrete overlays and repair slabs
- Grade 316 stainless resists chloride-induced corrosion in exposed or marine environments
Limitations
- Requires minimum 20 mm cover concrete — cannot be used in very thin overlays
- Stainless steel mesh is significantly more expensive than mild steel mesh — budget impact
