Exterior enamel systems — timber
Exterior acrylic enamel systems are the standard finish for timber facade elements — window frames, fascias, soffits, balustrades and weatherboards. Applied over a suitable timber primer, they provide a semi-gloss or gloss finish that resists moisture ingress, UV degradation, and biological growth. Acrylic formulations have largely replaced alkyd oil-based enamels due to improved flexibility and retention of gloss in exterior exposure.
What are exterior enamel systems for timber?
Exterior enamel systems for timber are three-coat protective coating systems — primer, undercoat, and gloss topcoat — applied to exterior timber trim elements including doors, window frames, fascias, and architraves on building facades. They provide UV resistance, moisture protection, and a durable gloss finish on exposed timber.

Dulux Weathershield Exterior Gloss
UV-resistant exterior gloss enamel — timber trim and doors

Do not confuse exterior enamel systems for timber with:
- UV-resistant enamel systems for metal — metal enamels are formulated for hard, dimensionally stable substrates; timber enamels must accommodate moisture-related wood movement and swelling — they are different product classes even when both are described as 'exterior enamel'
- Penetrating timber stains and oils — penetrating products absorb into the timber grain and do not form a surface film; they cannot be overcoated with enamel without full strip-back and will not provide the same opacity or film protection as an enamel system
- Exterior acrylic masonry wall paint — low-sheen exterior acrylic topcoats for concrete and render are not formulated for smooth trim timber; they lack the film hardness and gloss stability required for window frames and timber joinery
- Timber decking and floor coatings — decking coatings are formulated for horizontal traffic-bearing surfaces with non-slip properties and abrasion resistance; they are not suitable for vertical facade timber elements
- 2-pack polyurethane or epoxy timber coatings — 2-pack systems are used for marine, commercial, or high-traffic timber; they are harder and less flexible than exterior acrylic enamels and may crack on residential facade timber that experiences thermal and moisture movement
Disclaimer
General technical information only. Timber must be sound, dry (moisture content <18%) and free from rot before repainting. All bare timber must be primed before topcoating — acrylic enamel applied direct to bare timber will fail. Confirm primer and recoat requirements from the current manufacturer TDS.
