Elastomeric coating systems

Elastomeric coatings are high-build acrylic systems formulated to bridge hairline cracks and provide a flexible waterproof membrane over concrete and render facades. Applied at a higher film thickness than standard acrylics, they accommodate minor substrate movement and resist water penetration through micro-cracking. Required on facades where hairline cracking is present but full render replacement is not warranted.

What are elastomeric coating systems?

Elastomeric coatings are high-build flexible exterior coatings for masonry and render facades that provide enhanced waterproofing, crack tolerance, and durability compared to standard exterior acrylics. The elastomeric binder allows the coating film to stretch and recover with substrate movement, accommodating fine and hairline cracks without splitting.

Do not confuse elastomeric coating systems with:

  • Standard exterior acrylic topcoat systems — standard two-coat acrylics (e.g. Dulux Weathershield) are not elastomeric; they have insufficient elongation to bridge hairline movement cracks and will crack through — listed on the exterior acrylic coating systems page
  • Elastomeric crack-bridging coatings — crack-bridging coatings are applied at even higher DFT (250–400µm vs 150–200µm) with higher elongation for wider dormant cracks; they are a more specialised product listed separately on the elastomeric crack-bridging coating page
  • Liquid-applied waterproof membranes — liquid membranes are applied to horizontal or buried surfaces (balcony decks, planter boxes, below-slab) with specific primer and detailing requirements; facade elastomerics are different products for vertical exterior surfaces
  • Anti-carbonation coatings — anti-carbonation specialist coatings are formulated to resist CO2 diffusion through the film to protect embedded steel reinforcement; standard elastomeric coatings provide some incidental protection but are not assessed or warranted for this purpose
  • Texture coatings — factory-blended textured acrylic or cement coatings produce a roughcast or patterned finish and are a different product class from smooth-film high-build elastomeric systems
