UV-resistant enamel systems — metal
UV-resistant enamel topcoats are specified for ferrous and non-ferrous metal facade elements — balustrades, lintels, window frames, louvres and metal cladding — where a durable, gloss or semi-gloss corrosion-resistant finish is required. Applied over an appropriate rust-inhibiting primer, they provide a hard film with good UV stability and colour retention in exterior exposure conditions.
What are UV-resistant enamel systems for metal?
UV-resistant exterior enamels for metal are protective topcoat coatings applied to steel, aluminium, iron, and galvanised metal facade elements on buildings. They provide UV resistance, colour retention, and corrosion protection — always applied as a two-coat system over a compatible rust-inhibiting or etch primer depending on the substrate.

Dulux Metalshield Gloss
UV-resistant exterior enamel — metal substrates — steel and aluminium
System Description
Dulux Metalshield Gloss is a premium UV-resistant exterior enamel topcoat for metal substrates on building facades. It provides a durable gloss finish with strong UV resistance, colour retention, and corrosion protection on steel, aluminium, and iron facade elements — including window frames, balustrades, fascias, gutters, and decorative metal panels. Applied as a topcoat over compatible Dulux Metalshield rust-inhibiting primer (zinc phosphate or etch primer depending on substrate), it forms a hard, durable enamel film resistant to the combined weathering stresses of UV, moisture, and atmospheric pollutants. Dulux Metalshield is the benchmark exterior metal enamel system in Australia with wide national trade availability. Confirm current product range, primer specification, substrate preparation requirements, and coastal grade suitability from the current Dulux Metalshield product TDS before specifying. Abrasive blasting or mechanical preparation to the required standard (Sa 2½ or St 3) is mandatory for steel before primer application.
Technical Properties
- UV-resistant gloss enamel — strong colour retention and chalk resistance on exterior metal facade elements
- Applied over compatible Dulux Metalshield rust-inhibiting primer — zinc phosphate or etch primer depending on substrate
- Suitable for steel, aluminium, iron and galvanised metal facade elements — confirm substrate suitability from TDS
Limitations
- Steel preparation to Sa 2½ or St 3 mandatory before primer — do not apply primer or topcoat over mill scale or rust
- Not for immersion or prolonged water contact — specify anti-corrosion coating system for submerged or wet service
- Colour and gloss retention will be lower for solvent-based enamel in high-UV environments — confirm UV grade from TDS

Do not confuse UV-resistant enamel systems for metal with:
- Rust-inhibiting zinc primers — zinc phosphate and zinc-rich primers are the first coat applied to bare metal before enamel topcoat; the enamel topcoat alone over bare metal provides no corrosion protection — always apply primer first
- Exterior enamel systems for timber — timber enamels are formulated with greater flexibility to accommodate wood movement and swelling; applying a rigid metal enamel to timber joints and window frames can cause cracking and premature adhesion failure
- PVDF and fluoropolymer cladding systems — PVDF (Kynar 500) is a factory-applied fluoropolymer for aluminium curtain wall and ACP panels achieving AAMA 2605; site-applied or standard metal enamels are not equivalent and will not achieve 20-year weathering performance on cladding panels
- 2-pack epoxy topcoats — 2-pack epoxy provides excellent adhesion and chemical resistance but is not UV stable outdoors; it yellows and chalks rapidly in exterior exposure — use for internal or below-ground metalwork only, not exterior facade elements
- Acrylic masonry paint on metal — standard exterior acrylic wall paints are not formulated for metal substrates; they lack the adhesion, hardness and corrosion resistance of metal enamels and will fail prematurely over bare or primed metal
Disclaimer
General technical information only. Enamel topcoat performance is entirely dependent on surface preparation and primer — metal must be prepared to the required cleanliness grade before priming.
